Problematising Muslims, Normalising Islamophobia: A Decade of Commentary 2010-20

£15.00

This self curated collection, draws together a decade of my commentary and op-ed type writings about British Muslims, Islamophobia and associated issues. Covering the ten years since 2010, this engaging collection provides an insightful record of a period of time when the 'problematisation' of British Muslims was never far from the news headlines and where Islamophobia became ever more 'normalised' in the public and political spaces. Beginning in 2010 with a response to the fact that Islamophobic hate crime was being repeatedly overlooked, my writing takes in such events as the establishment of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Islamophobia, the nail bombing of mosques in the West Midlands, allegations of a state school 'takeover' in the city of Birmingham, the Prevent Duty, halal hysteria, the Brexit referendum, the terror attack on the Finsbury Park mosque, Boris Johnson's 'letterboxes' slur, 'Punish a Muslim Day', the backlash following the Christchurch mosque killings and Shamima Begum, finishing with reflections on the 'New Normal' in the post-COVID-19 world. Uniquely placed to comment and criticise, this book affords an opportunity to think through how and why Muslims can be seen to be problematised in the contemporary setting and how Islamophobia continues to be increasingly normalised.
